Every time the topic of bartering comes up, people always fall back on the same three items without fail. We have been told that stocking up on alcohol, cigarettes, gold and silver will be the prime form of currency during an extended emergency. I do agree having these items are useful but unfortunately, I’m not financially in a spot where I can stock up on these rather expensive items. In addition, if everyone has the same idea, supply and demand dictates that they may not be as valuable as you intended.
If you have every had a BBQ and realized that no one has a way to light the grill, you soon realize that a 5 cent pack of matches is just as valuable as the items I listed above. I am an avid couponer as Ive stated in my early articles on food storage, I am also a huge fan of the local dollar stores. This treasure trove of cheap deals is an excellent resource for stocking up on inexpensive bartering items. One thing to note, I am also a big proponent of using what you store and storing what you use. Just because you shell out a few buck for these items doesn’t necessarily mean they will be collecting dust in your attic. Use them freely, just remember to replenish as needed.
I compiled a quick list of things I personally bought specifically for bartering during a SHTF scenario. If you have anything that you think should be added to the list, add them in the comments below.
SHTF Bartering Items You Need To Stock
- Manual Can Openers
- Toilet Paper
- Ramen Noodles
- Fever/Inflammation Reducer
- Water Purification Tablets
- Ziploc or Garbage Bags
- Plastic Wrap
- Milk Powder
- Pain Relievers
- Flu/Cold Medication
- Eye Drops
- Feminine Supplies
Just remember this is just a short list of ideas that you can use Use your imagination and stock up on things that you feel would be beneficial in a crisis. Think about those little things you use everyday that you cant live without.
A very good example is a can opener, many people only have electric can openers and don’t posses the knowledge of opening a can without one. In conclusion, add these items to your shopping list and buy a little at a time, you will be amazed how fast your bartering inventory will grow.
