Most of you are homesteaders, I know, but how many chickens do you have? I’m willing to bet that most of you don’t have as many I have…
Come on, I know you smirked and thought…â€HA…I have 20…she can’t beat that.â€
Well, I can….I currently have 56. Yes, they are all mine, and I love them dearly.
It’s a crazy type of love, though. It’s not one that humans can have with one another. It’s a love that only chickens and humans can have together.
Oh, and no inappropriateness here. This crazy love I’m talking about has all to do with what they do for me and what I do for them in return.
They Give Me Eggs
No….really? Yes. I know, surprising. BUT that is what they do for me, and I’m thankful every single morning when I go out there and pull them. It’s satisfying for them and me. We often chit chat about how successful they have been, and then I give them a pep talk. They are the most attentive people (er…chickens) I ever gave a motivational speech to.
They Make Me Money
I do not sell my chickens. I love them too much. However, they do make me money with the eggs they give me every day. People near and far come to buy eggs from me because they are big and fresh. People can’t get my eggs at their grocery store.
By the way, I’m one of the only homesteaders in the area. People love to laugh about it, but I know they just don’t understand.
They Make Me Laugh
Chickens are hilarious, especially mine. They know what to do to make me laugh. They will jump and scream with delight when I let them out each day. They turn to me and run behind me as I run around cleaning. They want me to play with them mostly. And yes, they even go after anything I throw out. It’s just like playing fetch with a dog, except they refuse to return anything to me.
I Keep Them Safe
As I said, they do a lot for me, and so I do a lot for them. My homestead has acres upon acres of room for them. They have a high quality, roomy coop. You can’t find these online or in the store because my husband built it. You all probably thought I didn’t have a family, right? Well, I do. I have a husband and three grown children. I have plenty of human love, but chicken love is still some of the best love I’ve ever received.
I Feed Them
They love to eat. Who doesn’t? I make sure they are well fed and have plenty of water. Yes, I spend most of my day making sure they aren’t hungry or thirsty. It’s my job as “Mother Chicken.â€
I Give Them Love
All of my chickens allow me to pick them up and hold them. Each day, I sit down and do this with each one of them. This is special time for love between me and my chickens. They look forward to it. I know that because as soon as I am done cleaning their coop and feeding them, they look over at the stool I have for sitting. Once I sit down, they all come up to me like eager Kindergarteners looking for story time.
They Give Me Love
When I hold each one of my chickens, they sit still and just receive the love. In turn, I feel as though they love me for giving them love. Sometimes, I almost feel as though they cuddle up on me. They even look at me with those beautiful chicken eyes in a way that says, “Thank you…I love you.â€
I give my chickens the best. They are my babies. The crazy love I have for my chickens could never be replaced. I will love them to my last living day.
